History
Hematite is a red iron oxide and has similar properties to rust, the name is derived from Greek word “haima” meaning “blood“ because of the minerals blood-red colour when cut or powdered.
Hematite has a long historical use with humans, between 2500 B.C and 500 B.C Hematite was used in carving cylinder seals, these seals were first used in Mesopotamia. Seals also played a very important role as they help to keep record of commercial and legal actions and transactions.
Hematite has also been grounded and used a pigment, the earliest cave paintings created by the prehistoric man were made used crushed Hematite and date to over 167,000 years ago.
Egyptians used it to decorate the tombs of pharaohs and Native Americans used it as war paint.
