Malachite’s name is derived from the Latin work “melochite” alluding to the minerals resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant.

The mineral has been extensively mined in the United Kingdom 3,800 years ago at the Great Orme Mines using primitive tools made from bone and rock.

It is estimated that the Malachite mined at that location produced up to 1,800 tons of copper by 600 BCE.

Malachite has been crushed and used as a pigment for thousands of years, it is one of the oldest green pigments to be used in paintings.

Ancient Egyptians wore Malachite in jewelry and used it in carvings and ornaments, the erliest Egyptian mines of malachite are located between Mount Sinai and the Suez and are dated as far back as 4000 BCE.

The image if the Sun God Ra was carved into amulets and worn to protect the wearer from evil spirits, Malachite was considered to be a protective gem for children.
