Moss Agate is not technically a true Agate, because it is not banded, it is a Chalcedony with green dendric inclusions. The gemstone has also been known as "Mocha stone" after the Arabian city of Mocha in Yemen.  Most Moss Agates are found as fragments weathered from volcanic rocks.

History

In Ancient Greece this Agate was used to make jewellery as it was believed wearing the gemstone attracted favours and fortune from the gods. 

Because of its appearance Moss Agate is more particularly linked to earth and nature. It is associated with many different cultures most commonly to their rituals and harvest beliefs.
Native American tribes gave this stone the power of changing the weather often using it in the “Rainmaking” ritual that was performed to invoke rain.

In the Middle-Ages Moss Agates were used by Farmers and Gardeners who believed that placing the stone near their fields and gardens would attract a more prosperous harvest.

The Stone is also closely associated historically with midwives, they would wear Moss Agate to help reduce pains and give courage to the woman giving birth.
