Chrysoprase, sometimes called the stone of Venus, is a gemstone variety of chalcedony that contains small amounts of nickel giving the stone its olive, apple-green to deep-green colour.
This Gemstone was known to ancient Greeks and Romans, and it was named after its appearance using the Greek names for “golden apple” and “golden leek”.

History:
Chrysoprase was used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, because of its vivid natural colours it was used to make Jewellery including signets, amulets and bracelets, it was very often used in making ornaments and other decorative objects.
The name Chrysoprase was derived from the Greek word chrusos meaning golden, and prason meaning leek, indicating the golden-leek green colour of this gemstone.
The stone is part of the Chalcedony family and it is the rarest and most valuable green gemstone in this lineage, it was valued by ancient jewellers and commonly mistaken for emerald.
According to a story by a Dominican friar named Albertus Magnus, Chrysoprase Stone was worn by one of the most successful undefeated military commanders in history, Alexander III of Macedonia Alexander. According to Magnus, when Alexander went into battle he always wore a belt embedded with a bright chrysoprase stone. On his return from a successful campaign in India. Alexander took off his belt and bathed in the Euphrates River. While the belt laid unattended a serpent emerged and bit off the Stone, dropping it into to the river; the story goes that Alexander never won another battle after losing his Chrysoprase talisman.
This story draws some parallels with the story of Gilgamesh, who is shown how to find the elixir of youth and recovers it but wants to try it out on one of his old wise men back home first (before he risks taking it himself), he leaves it on the bank of the river whilst he bathes and a snake steals it. Thus, having been denied immortality, Gilgamesh is also denied a return to his youth.
