Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue metamorphic rock, it is considered to be a semi-precious stone prized for centuries for its beautiful appearance.
The stone is also known a Blue Corundum or simply Lapis

History
The name Lapis Lazuli is derived from two different cultures, Lapis is Latin for “Stone” and Lazuli is derived from Persian word “lazhuward” meaning blue.
Lapis Lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan as long as 12,000 years ago, the stone was exported to the Mediterranean and Asia during the Neolithic age.
It was used to make the famous burial mask of King Tutankhamen where it was inlaid with turquoise and gold.
Powdered Lapis was used as eye shadow by Cleopatra and most of Egyptian royalty.
Pilny the Elder famous Roman historian and naturalist wrote that Lapis Lazuli is “opaque and sprinkled with specs of gold”.
Biblical scholars believe that references in the Old testament referring to sapphires are actually indicating Lapis Lazuli because sapphires were not known in the middle east at that time.
In the old Jewish traditions the stone was considered to be a symbol of success because it combines the blue of the heavens and the golden glitter of the sun.
In the early Christian tradition Lapis was regarded as the stone of Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ.
