The name derives from the town of Chalcedony which was a Thracian township held at times by the Greeks (Athenians) during the period of the Athenian Empire. It now consitutes a district within the Turkish city of Istanbul - Kadikoy.

It comprises quartz crystals of microscopic and sub-microscopic size which develop radially grown 'fibers' ; sometimes there will be concentric banding which runs perpendicular to the fibers, and is then known as Agate - eg Blue Lace

The family of Chalcedony covers many varieties of crystals more familiarly known as Carnelian, Bloodstone, Agate, Chrysoprase, Jasper, Pietersite and Sard. The replacement mineral in Petrified Wood is also usually Chalcedony

Metaphysical & Healing Properties

Known as the Stone of Brotherhood as it bestows 'goodwill' to all, it is a stone that brings Harmony, Balance and Stability to Body, Mind and Spirit. As a stone of the Throat Chakra it is a communicative aid and, being a soothing stone, can be helpful for Public Speaking.

This is another stone that can be used to ease Mental Anxiety, fear and self judgement.

Harmonizes/Combines with 

History Native American tribes have used Chalcedony traditionally for ceremonies and the Greeks and Egyptians included this stone when creating Amulets of Healing.
