History 

Though Agates can be found anywhere in the world (though Botswana Agate comes from Botswana) their history is tied in with a small town in Germany called Idar-Oberstein as this is where Agates were traditionally cut and polished; Idar-Oberstein had something of a monopoly on the skills and craftsmanship needed for bringing the best out of Agate stones. It remains, to this day, an essential centre of activity and production in the world of crystals and gem cutting.
