History
Iolite is named after the Greek word “ ios” meaning violet, due to the gemstones beautiful appearance it was nicknamed “ the water sapphire”.
It was officially named in 1912 but the stone was used and valued by many throughout human history.
According to some Nordic legends, Iolite was called the Viking compass stone as it is said that thin slices of iolite served as glare reducers and polarising filters that helped Vikings to locate the sun even on the most cloudy days. This allowed them to accurately pinpoint their location. It is believed that the stone enabled the Vikings to reach and conquer locations around the globe.
