The shimmer of Moonstone is called the “schiller effect” and is caused by tiny layers of various Feldspar minerals (most notably Albite) which are laid down during the crystallisation process. All Moonstones on the market are natural, enhanced only tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History
Moonstone has a long history of being associated with the moon. The oldest historical reference was by Pliny the Elder who wrote that the size and position of the shimmer of the moonstone changes position on the stone in accordance with the waxing and waning lunar cycles and this was proven by Italian scientist, Antoine Mizuald. He carefully recorded these changes and his research led him to conclude that there is in fact a direct correspondence between Moonstone gems and the Moon. The stone has been associated with the female menstrual cycle, fertility and childbirth. It is also considered a lucky stone and has a strong use in ‘love spells’.
